Tracy Chapman and Alice Walker living in one of those painted ladies, in San Francisco

(...) When George arrived, we sat and sipped wine, gossiping about the neighbors. George is the only living person who has been inside all six of the Painted Ladies. Over the years, movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers have been filmed inside them, and various famous people have been owners. He told me how Alice Walker (who wrote The Color Purple) used to own one and would host mini Tracy Chapman concerts until the neighbors complained she played the same songs over and over. (I can understand it's only so many times before "Fast Car" becomes "Annoying Car.")

Alice Walker talks about her relationship with Tracy Chapman in "Beauty in Truth"

PBS premiered "Beauty in Truth" a portrait of Alice Walker by Pratibha Parmar on February 7, 2014. In this documentary Alice Walker openly talks about her love affair with Tracy Chapman.

Extract from DivaMag interview of Pratibha Parmar

It's quite a big deal to open your life up to a filmmaker, even if you are good friends. Was she prepared to talk about her sexuality? About her relationship with Tracy Chapman?
Yes, she did have a very high profile relationship with Tracy Chapman, so there's always this incredible curiosity about Alice's sexuality, and I do interview her about it in the film. She's very open about the other women she's had relationships with, as well as the relationship with Tracy. I think that's just her honesty and respect for people she loves and has loved.

Does Alice Walker ID as bisexual?
No, she won't label herself. She refuses. She says, "I'm curious. I'm open to the spirit of a person whether that's a man or a woman or whoever, that's not what's important to me. What's important is the spirit". Having looked at her life and all that she's done and having seen her in relationships with women and men, I think she's absolutely true to herself and open to whoever rings her bell.

Synopsis of "Beauty in Truth" by Pratibha Parmar

American Masters — Alice Walker: Beauty in Truth charts Walker’s inspiring journey from her birth into a family of sharecroppers in Eatonton, Georgia, to the present. The film explores Walker’s relationship with her mother, poverty, and participation in the Civil Rights Movement, which were the formative influences on her consciousness and became the inherent themes in her writing. Living through the violent racism and seismic social changes of mid-20th century America, Walker overcame adversity to achieve international recognition as one of the most influential — and controversial — writers of the 20th century.

Alice Walker to publish personal diary in 2017

Alice Walker declared in the past (to the Guardian in 2006) that she was planning to publish her journals in which she tells about her relationship with Tracy Chapman "She has written about the relationship in her journals, which she plans to publish one day."

So we were more than happy to read that Alice Walker is set to publish excerpts from her personal diary in 2017!!  The book will be entitled Gathering Blossoms Under Fire and will be edited by Valerie Boyd. It will contains extracts from more than 65 notebooks written during more than 50 years. Those notebooks document her life’s journey from a sharecropper’s shack in rural Georgia to becoming a cultural icon. Of course it will mention her struggle, her life as w writer and her love relationships, including the one with folk singer Tracy Chapman!

Alice talks about her affair with Tracy Chapman

It had the effect of a bomb when the Guardian published the interview of Alice Walker talking about her love affair with Tracy Chapman. However if everyone (=in the lesbian small world) knew it, it was the first time that one of them would talk publicly about it.

Extract of No Retreat (December 15, 2006) :

I tell her people are still fascinated by her love affair with the singer Tracy Chapman in the mid-1990s. Moments earlier she had said firmly but politely that she didn't want to answer any questions about her family life. (Her daughter Rebecca, from her marriage to Levanthal, published a frank memoir in 2000 in which she criticised the self-absorption of both parents after their divorce.) So I was surprised to see her face light up at the mention of Chapman. "Yeah I loved it too. Absolutely."
Why was it kept so quiet at the time? "It was quiet to you maybe but that's because you didn't live in our area," she answers with a throaty laugh. She has written about the relationship in her journals, which she plans to publish one day. So why did they decide against using their relationship to make a big social impact like other celebrity lesbian couples, such as Ellen DeGeneres and Anne Heche, have in the past? The idea seems to amuse her. "I would never do that. My life is not to be somebody else's impact - you know what I mean? And it was delicious and lovely and wonderful and I totally enjoyed it and I was completely in love with her but it was not anybody's business but ours."
